The Admiral's Palace was on the land
that today occupies the Calderón Theater, Alonso Berruguete Street, and two
houses on Las Angustias Street. Ahead there was a large esplanade, where the
construction of the Angustias Church began in 1597.
It had two heights: the ground floor
with iron bars on its windows and the upper one with balconies with a Gothic
spirit. The facade was flanked on both sides with a hammer-shaped keep
There is very little data on this
building. It was the residence of the Enriquez family, whose chief held the
title of Admiral of Castile, one of the first dignities of Spain. It was the residence of Fernando el Católico
and his second wife Germana de Foix and the place where their son Juan was
born, who died a few days later.
In honor of don Fadrique, second
Admiral of Castile, an inscription engraved on a black marble tombstone was
placed on the palace door, which recalled the Admiral's support during the uprising of the Comuneros.
In 1863 it was sold to the construction company of the Calderón Theater and on June 1 of that same year
the demolition began.
Only fragments of tiles, rose windows
and ataurines (which are kept in the Archaeological Museum) and a drawing of
the cover remains from the old building.
